| What a pleasure it was to climb this morning without
panniers on our bikes. Not only was it easier, but we found a gear
on our bikes that hadn't been used for a while. Thank you Ron and
Cindy!
The scenery has changed drastically from what we saw west of the Cascades. The weather coming off the Pacific Ocean drops a lot of rain on the region west of the mountains, therefore the landscape is lush green forests. However, very few of those rains make it over the mountains. East of the Cascades the landscape is hot, dry desert. The High Desert area was like a scene out of a western movie. We expected to see cowboys and Indians come from behind the hills and buttes at any time. The ride into Dayville was long and hot. Our planned stop for the night was at the cycle friendly Dayville Presbyterian Church. We had read a lot about the kind folks there and the great facilities they offer. What we found turned out to be as great as advertised. The facilities included a shower with clean towels, a well stocked kitchen, and carpeted sleeping quarters. All of this in an unlocked building so touring cyclists can come and go as they please. Our cycling friend Andy showed up also so we decided to put on a feed. We went to the Dayville Mercantile, got supplies, and made the best dinner we've had so far. Tossed salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, and half a gallon ice cream for dessert. Life is good on the Transamerica Trail! |
