| We started riding today at 6:30 under almost ideal
conditions. Cool temperatures, low humidity, very little wind, and
flat roads made for a very pleasant ride.
We rode past the Cold Harbor National Cemetery , and the Richmond National Battlefield located near the James River. There were places along the way where we could still see the bunkers dug by Confederate soldiers during those battles in the early 1860's. The many site markers along the road and land set aside for memorials were a grim reminder of that dark period in our nation's history. The ride along SR 5 was beautiful as we cycled long stretches of tree lined, canopied highway. Most of the way was in a refreshingly cool shade. We could tell the coast was growing closer with the increase in our pace because of the gentler terrain. We can almost smell the salt air as we ride along the James River headed for Williamsburg and eventually to the finish in Yorktown. Our heart rates have most certainly increased thinking about the finish to our trip tomorrow. Since there are no motels along SR 5 we decided to ride into Hopewell (9 miles off the route) to stay for the night. We got a room in the rundown Evergreen Motel that didn't have any non-smoking rooms. The room they gave us must have been occupied by a chain smoker for the past 6 months. It was bad! We got a can of deodorizer spray from the cleaning lady and doused the place real good, but it didn't help much. For dinner we ate at a nearby Subway. We then walked a couple of blocks to a grocery store to buy breakfast items for tomorrow and a half gallon of ice cream. This one will be our 17th and final one of the trip. We're sure we'll suffer some real withdrawal when we get back home and aren't able to devour a box of ice cream at one sitting. We've enjoyed that part of the trip! |
