| Another 5:00 start gave us the chance to get out of
Charlottesville before rush hour traffic started. It was a chilly morning with temperatures in the 50's. We could have used
those fleece jackets we sent home back in Colorado.
By studying the maps last night we saw that the marked route did a lot of zigzagging, which seemed to add distance to the ride. Yes, we realize that it goes through the scenic, historic countryside, but we know from experience that the roads were probably very hilly. It seems that in the old days when a new road was made they just paved over the hills and through the valleys and didn't make any attempt to smooth things out. Newer roads are easier to ride because of modern engineering methods that reduce the hills. US 250 is almost a straight shot from Charlottesville to Ashland so that's the road we took. It was a nice road with paved shoulders much of the way and because it parallels Interstate 64 there was not a lot of traffic. Our alternate route saved us 20 miles. Our first stop in Ashland was at the library to send the last email to friends and family that have been tracking our trip. We also sent an email to our cousin Larry, who lives in Virginia Beach and is meeting us at the finish in Yorktown. We're going back to his home after the finish to shower, eat, and just plain veg out. It'll be nice to visit with Larry and his family. Since we've grown up and moved away from home we don't get to see him very often. Lodging for tonight is at the Super 8 Motel in Ashland near Interstate 64. Our dinner was the all you can eat buffet at Ponderosa, with an ice cream bar of course. |
