| The day started with a breakfast of bread with peanut butter, muffins, juice and coffee
in our motel room. We beat the heat this morning, but the
threatening skies, hilly terrain, and headwinds made up for it.
In Radford we stopped at Mrs. Wade's Grocery store for lunch. Their deli sandwiches, macaroni salad, and banana pudding was just what we needed. While eating lunch we studied the maps and thought about taking US 11 instead of the back roads suggested by Adventure Cycling. After some discussion we agreed that it would be heavy traffic on US 11 so we conceded to traveling the mapped route. The trip through Christiansburg was uneventful except for a short screaming downhill stretch of East Main Street going out of town. We had to ride the brakes the whole way down to keep from losing control of our bikes. Once we left Christiansburg the route continued on a small, hilly, secondary road. When we arrived in the crossroads of Ellett our thoughts returned to the pleasant cycling we had yesterday on US 11. By studying the map and talking to a local delivery man there we were able to find a road that would return us to Route 11. Even though it meant having to ride through the middle of Salem and Roanoke we opted for this leveler, more direct course. When we arrived in Glenvar, a suburb of Salem, we got a room at the Blue Jay Motel and had dinner at the Blue Jay Restaurant. The meal was good, but the portions were smaller than what we're used to. If only there was a store nearby so we could get some ice cream. |
