| Can you believe it! We got up at 4:30 this morning and
Clayton and Patsy McGlothlin were already at the Oaks Restaurant getting
breakfast ready for us. We ordered pancakes and coffee the night
before and when we got there at 5:00 it was ready and waiting. These
folks are out of this world. The Oaks Restaurant in Rosedale is a
must stop for all cross country cyclists! After breakfast we got big hugs and handshakes from the McGlothlins,
said our goodbyes, and headed out the door to try out the latest shortcut
we had. On this shortcut we went through the towns of Saltville,
the site of the first salt mine in the United States, Chilhowie,
known as the Apple Center of Southwest Virginia and it's lavish Apple
Festival, Seven Mile Ford, Marion, the Smyth county seat,
Atkins, and Groseclose.
By
the time we got to Wytheville our bike computers showed that we had
shortened our trip by 29 miles. We also eliminated the difficult
climb over Clinch Mountain as well as the dangerous descent. We felt
good about what we had accomplished today. Tonight we are staying in the
Travel Lite Motel in downtown Wytheville. We took advantage of the laundromat
next to the motel and did some much needed wash. While we were going
back to the motel we heard people calling to us from behind. We
turned around and there came two cross country cyclists, John and
Rosemarie Dunlop, riding up the sidewalk. They told us about seeing
our entries in guest books, and hearing about us from west bound cyclists
for the past month or so. They've been riding hard to try and catch
up and were happy to see us walking up the street. The Dunlop's checked
into the Travel Lite as we went for something to eat at Wendy's.
After eating we went back to the motel and visited with John and
Rosemarie. It was a good time of sharing information and telling
stories from the trip. We didn't want the evening to end. |
