| The ride today was another early start, hot and humid, and
filled with lots of hills. This never ending roller-coaster is
getting old!
By the time we got to Elizabethtown it was time for a break and something to eat. We stopped in the Town & Country Restaurant for lunch and had a wonderful experience. The whole place was decorated in Coke memorabilia from top to bottom. The meal was delicious and reasonably priced, and all three of the young ladies working there took turns waiting on our table. We felt like celebrities in this rural town on the banks of the Ohio River. After lunch we had a short ride to Cave-In-Rock and the ferry ride across the Ohio River into Kentucky. The free ferry is the only way to cross the river for miles in either direction. After all the hills in Missouri and Illinois it was a real pleasure to park the bikes and take this relaxing half mile trip into a new state. It wasn't long after we crossed the Ohio River that we came to Marion, Kentucky and decided to end our ride for today. When we first entered town our thoughts centered on a place to stay for the night. There was a lady crossing the street nearby so we asked if she knew of a place to stay. She said, "You're the second person to ask me that in the last 15 minutes. Check out the Methodist church, they've allowed cyclists to stay there in the past." We wondered if the other person to ask her was our friend Art. What a nice facility the church turned out to be. They have a shower, a place to park bicycles, a well stocked kitchen, and plenty of cool sleeping spaces. It wasn't long after we unpacked our bikes and made our beds that another cyclist showed up looking for a place to stay. Sure enough, it was Art. We invited him to camp with us at the church. He said, "OK, but dinner is on me this evening. I want to repay you folks for the dinner you made for me in Golden City, MO." We didn't argue with him about it. Art went shopping at a local grocery store to buy the ingredients to make burritos. They were delicious! We had a good time eating and sharing stories from the road. Of course, dessert was a half gallon of ice cream. |
