| We had a wonderful night's sleep last night. The
Golden City hostel was super - if only there were more like it along the trail. After breakfast of pancakes and scrambled eggs we said our
goodbyes to Art and headed out for today's ride.
It didn't take long for us to realize the flat terrain was behind us and we'd be riding hills all day today. They weren't long hills, but very steep that took all our effort to get to the top. Once we crested the hill it was a quick descent down the other side to where we'd have to climb all over again. This roller coaster ride went on forever. Combine the hills with a temperature in the 90's and a heat index over 100 and we had a tough day. Marshfield was a welcome sight at the end of a long day. We arrived at 4:30 in the afternoon and were exhausted. Our first stop was at the newly remodeled Plaza Motel to get a room for the night. There were very few cars in the parking lot so it looked like getting a room wouldn't be a problem. However, when we checked at the desk the clerk was very unfriendly and said they were all booked up for the night. Our impression was that she had rooms, she just didn't want cyclists using them. We had heard earlier in the trip of motels that refuse rooms to cyclists, this must be one of them. The alternative was the more expensive Holiday Inn, but they did have a breakfast in the morning. After checking into the Holiday Inn and taking a long, refreshing shower we headed out to get dinner. The Country Kitchen was the closest place so that's were we went. The all you can eat salad bar looked inviting, we really weren't in the mood for a hot meal. There was a good selection of items on the bar, but it turned out to be average at best. Back at the motel all we wanted to do was lay down. While Gary and Ron were catching a couple of winks, Carol went to the front desk to see if we could get any of the breakfast items tonight. That way we'd have breakfast and still get an early start in the morning. Early starts are a must in this heat. When Carol came back the lady at the front desk had given her cereal, bagels, bread, fruit, cookies, cream cheese, and peanut butter. Wow! We not only had our breakfast we also had lunch. Maybe these Missourians aren't so bad after all. |
