It's always nice to go into new states, but we were sad to leave friendly Kansas behind. Regular, unleaded, or high test? Cattle gates are used all through the West and Midwest to keep cattle in their pasture.

Today we finally had a tailwind in Kansas!  Actually the wind was from the southwest, but we'll take it.

The guys who laid out the roads in Kansas helped to do western Missouri also because they either go east-west or north-south.  We zigzaged our way to the Missouri border, then had a straight shot into Golden City, MO.  All with that nice tailwind.

Lunch today in Pittsburg, KS at Harry's Cafe was great.  Tuna sandwich on homemade bread, potato soup, and peanut butter pie is just what the doctor prescribed to make the rest of the 95 miles to Golden City.  While we ate the waitress told us some of the history of Harry's.  She said he passed away a few years ago, but his 93 year old widow still comes in and works two 8 hour shifts on the weekend.  It would have been a real treat to meet her.  We're sure she could have related some stories from the "good old days".

As we got closer to Golden City the landscape changed from gently rolling hills to steeper grades.  Wherever the map showed a creek or river we could count on a fast downhill to cross the stream, but then an equally steep climb on the other side.  All the westbound cyclists we talked to warned us of the Missouri Ozarks.  These rolling hills made us think of what's to come.

Golden City has a hostel that is always open to touring cyclists.  The directions we had took us right to it.  When we got there we were presently surprised to find Art, the young man from Nickerson, enjoying the place.  He got there yesterday and decided to stay another day and enjoy the nice facilities.  The hostel has 5 single beds, a bathroom with shower that is stocked with clean towels, a washer and dryer, a large kitchen with all the necessary dishes and utensils, and a well stocked pantry.  We went shopping at a nearby grocery store for the ingredients to make our favorite meal: spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, and ice cream for dessert.  We're no longer thinking of the Ozarks.
