Patriotism was evident all along the route. Eastern Kansas reminded us of where we grew up in Pennsylvania. A place for Rednecks and Longnecks.

Terri was the foreman of a bridge construction job we came to. Looks like Ron is going to get a snack at "his" IGA.

We slept in until 5:30 this morning, but not intentionally.  After packing up the bicycles we hurriedly ate the "grocery store" breakfast purchased yesterday and headed out the door.  It's good we had that hour delay because a thunderstorm had moved through the area just ahead of us - we would have ridden in the rain, thunder, and lightening for the first hour of the ride.

At about 50 miles into the ride we came to "Road Closed" signs, but went through anyway because they did say local traffic could pass through.  About 8 miles after the first sign we came to the Verdigris River and one of it's bridges was closed for repairs.  The surface had been removed and new concrete put in it's place.  The concrete was covered with plastic and water being applied so it would cure properly, so it looked like we were going to have to retrace our steps.  We stopped to talk to the job foreman about the possibility of an alternate route.  Terri, the foreman, said the concrete was hard enough that we could walk our bikes across, thus saving an 8 mile detour.  On the other side he told us we were the first people to go across the new bridge, except for the workers of course, and then proceeded to give each of us a cold soda from his cooler.  These construction guys in Kansas are OK!

When we arrived in Chanute we checked into the Guest House Motel, got cleaned up, and rode to Holiday Park Motel and Restaurant for their all you can eat buffet (not just salad bar).  The meal was very good and it cost less than $6 per person.  There was even an ice cream machine there, which was also all you can eat.  I don't know if the folks in Kansas ever saw three people eat that much ice cream before.  They watched us each time we went back for more.  Oh the pleasure of all you can eat buffets!
