These feeding pens are next to the railroad.  The cows are fattened up and then shipped to market. Oreo cows! Here's the answer to that age old question, "Where's the beef?"

Every town in Kansas has it's own grain elevator. Transam cyclists Rick & Pilar heading for the west coast. We stayed in the older, but well maintained Heritage Hotel.

Another shopping trip to get snacks for the night and breakfast for tomorrow morning.

We were up at 4:00 am  ready to eat our raspberry bear claws and sticky buns, but had no coffee to help wash it down.  Gary headed out for the nearby truck stop to get 3 cups of coffee when Bob, the motel owner, came out of his room and asked what was up.  When he heard we needed coffee he said, "I'll make some for you.  I have this gourmet coffee maker and I'd be happy to make each of you a cup.  It'll only take a couple of minutes."  In about 5 minutes he showed up at our room with the coffee.

Today's wind started before dawn, blowing from the east, and like yesterday grew stronger as the day went along.  We had heard about the wonderful Kansas tailwinds, but we haven't seen them yet.  This is hard work!

Our early breakfast was gone soon, so we needed to stop in Scott City for a meal.   The East End Cafe had a salad bar and it looked delicious.   The bar was stocked with with plenty of fresh salad items, fresh fruit, (watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew) and home made puddings and jellos.  It turned out to be an excellent meal and was more than we could eat.  We were stuffed!

The wind was blowing stronger yet when we left Scott City.  Our legs were getting very tired.  We also noticed that our arms were getting tired and couldn't figure out what was going on.  Finally Ron said, "It must be from all the waving we're doing."  He was right.  Whenever a vehicle passed us, in either direction, the people inside always waved. Of course we acknowledged by waving back.  These folks in Kansas are the friendliest, wavingest people we've ever seen.

The wind and heat helped us make the decision to stay in a motel in Dighton.  The Heritage Hotel fit the bill.  A hot shower, a good meal at Bear's Sport's Grill, and another half gallon of ice cream revived our spirits.  We settled in to enjoy a relaxing time of watching Lance Armstrong race stage 7 in the Tour de France.
