Early starts to beat the heat resulted in seeing sunrises like this. Jamie and her mom provided a refreshing break for us in Sheridan Lake, CO. We could see the grain elevator in Towner, CO for 7 miles before we got there.

Welcome to the Jayhawk State. Western Kansas was all we had heard about.  Flat and hot! Bob, the owner of the Trail's End Motel in Tribune, invited us to dinner.

We left this morning before the sun came up and were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise.  It was a nice time to be riding with the cooler temperatures, lack of traffic, and absence of wind.  If it could only stay that way all day.

Not a chance.  Soon after the sun came up a slight wind from the east started (headwind for you non-cyclists), and grew stronger as the day went along.  By the time we approached Tribune the wind was a steady 10-15 mph with stronger gusts.  We worked every mile of the way.

Along the way we had several pleasant rest stops.  In Eads we stopped for an official breakfast at Our Place Restaurant and it was delicious, especially the huge pecan roll.

We stopped at a gas station in Sheridan Lake for a soda and snack.  The owner's daughter waited on us and we had a nice conversation about bike touring.  Being teachers we always like to ask teens about their school experiences.  She told us she would be a junior next year and there are two (that's 2) in her class.  We could see Sheridan Lake was headed in the same direction as Haswell.

The temperature today was in the 90's again so when we got to Tribune we decided to get a room in a motel.  The first one we came to was the Trail's End Motel right along our route.  It looked like the right place to get a good night's sleep.

We checked in, went to our room, and started to unpack.  The room phone rang.  It was Bob Wainio, the owner of the motel.  He said he was grilling chicken halves and corn on the cob and wondered if we'd like to join him for dinner.  It took Carol about half a second to think it over then she said, "Sure!  What time do you want us there?"  In about 15 minutes we were standing by the grill enjoying our dinner.

Bob didn't have dessert for us so we went to a local grocery store to get our favorite.  Half a gallon of ice cream to be split three ways.  The Ozark Black Walnut ice cream and 2 liter of Pepsi disappeared quickly.  Ahhh!
