View of Cape Lookout Breakfast was at the Village Bakery and Coffee Shop.  The food was excellent, but more importantly the folks there were very friendly and offered a short cut that saved us 13 miles. Pasture with white daisies and Scotch Broom.

Phil and Merj Shrout were the first Transam cyclists we met.  They were also going east so we saw each other several times over the next few days. Time for a rest and something to eat at a corner store in Valley Junction. We spent the night in the sheep barn at the Polk County Campground.

The Polk County Campground offered lots of room for hanging up the laundry.

Not a major repair just fine tuning the cycle computer for the long ride ahead.

Exiting Cape Lookout Park we immediately encountered our first serious hill of the trip, almost 3 miles of up to 9% grade.  Our legs and lungs were burning upon reaching the summit.  The reward was an awesome view of the Pacific.

Arriving in Pacific City we asked the first person we saw for directions to a good place to eat breakfast.  They sent us to the Village Bakery and Coffee Shop, where everything is homemade.  After breakfast we asked some of the locals there for help with directions.  In no time the whole restaurant was talking to us and offering suggestions as to what would be the best way to go.  They wound up giving us a route that was 13 miles shorter, had less traffic, and was flatter than the one on our map.  We had no problem taking the short cut.

We stopped for the night in Rickreal, and stayed at the Polk County Fairgrounds.  We were allowed to choose the spot we wanted for the night so we picked one of the empty barns.   It was nice to have the opportunity to stay under cover.
