Most of Wyoming was desert that looked like this.   Grandma's Cafe showed up in the middle of the desert, and what a welcome sight it was! Two more Continental Divide crossings today.

Wyoming is a hot dessert.  Since we came down from Togwotee Pass the landscape has been a high, dry plateau covered with sagebrush and surrounded by mostly barren hills.  This part of Wyoming has many cattle ranches, the land doesn't look as though it has much use for anything else.  Besides cattle we saw lots of antelope.

Today's ride started with a nice tailwind as we rode east on US 287.  That push lasted for 15 miles when the wind shifted from the south.  Crosswinds are not as difficult to ride in as headwinds, but they do hinder progress.  Our pace slowed.

Twenty-two miles into the ride US 287 merged with SR 220 and made a turn to the south.  Those crosswinds were now official headwinds of 20+ mph.  We crawled along.

This lasted for the next 11 miles till we arrived in Lamont.  To this point there were very few buildings, and no rest stops, but we turned east in Lamont and there it was, an oasis in the middle of the desert.  The only building around was Grandma's Cafe.

Inside were two grandmotherly looking ladies just waiting for weary travelers to take care of.  We sure fit in that category.  The fresh made turkey sandwiches were delicious.  The berry medley pie a-la-mode was outstanding!

While we were eating a young couple, who saw our bikes parked outside, stopped in to talk.  They were traveling from Boulder, Colorado to Dubois and had hoped to see some cross country cyclists.  They had cycled cross country a couple of years earlier and were eager to swap stories with present day riders.  We had a good time of conversation while enjoying the delicious lunch.  We were forgetting about the winds.

That lunch energized us as we rode the rest of the way to Rawlings.  The heat and wind were reason enough to check into the Jade Motel for a good night's sleep.  We're looking for an easier day tomorrow.
