| The storm passed sometime during the night leaving our camp
soggy wet, but giving us a good night's sleep from the sound of the water dripping
off the trees. We needed the rest after not
sleeping a wink the night before.
Birds woke us early in the morning so we got up, packed the bikes, which again had that laundry look, and headed to the Lochsa Lodge for breakfast. The original lodge burned to the ground on February 28, 2001, but fortunately for cross country cyclists the owners rebuilt on the same site shortly after the fire. It's the only place cyclists can get a meal in the 85 mile stretch between Lowell and Lolo Hot Springs. We looked forward to a hot, filling breakfast to fuel our bodies for the day's ride. We ordered a big breakfast of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and of course coffee. When our meal was ready the waitress couldn't handle it all by herself so the cook helped her bring it to the table. He carried the pancakes out and when he placed them on the table our mouths dropped open. They were the biggest things we'd ever seen! Even bigger than the dinner plate he brought them out on. Wow! It feels great to be able to eat like this without having to be concerned about gaining weight. Leaving Powell we climbed to the summit of Lolo pass, crossed into Montana, and sped downhill to Missoula. Today's ride turned out to be much easier than expected. It must have been the pancakes. Since almost everything we had with us was wet from the past 2 nights of camping we decided to get a motel and dry out. We checked into the Royal Motel, only 2 blocks from the Adventure Cycling office, and proceeded to unpack our soggy gear. By the time we finished spreading it out in the parking lot our end of the motel had that distinct gypsy look. |
